A Different View
Three weeks ago we heard Peter’s confession of faith as told in John’s gospel. This week we hear Mark’s version, when Peter says, “You are the Messiah.” In John, the stumbling block is Jesus’ invitation to eat his flesh, given for the life of the world. In Mark too the scandal has to do with Jesus’ words about his own coming death, and here Peter himself stumbles over Jesus’ words. But Jesus is anointed (the meaning of messiah) in Mark only on the way to the cross (14:3); so we are anointed in baptism with the sign of the cross.

Thank you to everyone who has and continues to bring in food items for our food pantry. Please check on the food pantry to be sure it stays stocked up. Have you seen our chalkboard in the narthex? It has a list of items needed for that week. This week we could use ravioli.
YARD SALE OCTOBER 5
Our annual yard sale has been scheduled for the first Saturday in October, October 5. Bring in your sale items! They will be kept in the youth room until we need more room. Items will be priced and organized on October 4, we have sign up sheets for pricing, set up, sale hours, and tear down. Proceeds from the yard sale go toward our Thanksgiving food box ministry.
BARBECUE OCTOBER 5, TICKETS AVAILABLE SUNDAY!
Our barbecue benefiting Hands of Hope Clinic has also been scheduled for the first Saturday in October, October 5. Tickets are available for pre-sale. Please take some tickets to sell to friends and neighbors!

The Gathering and St. Luke Guys will meet on Friday, September 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Buckner's. The Gathering will then meet at the Joyner's house for their lesson.

A Swedish diplomat, Hammarskjöld served as the second Secretary General of the United Nations until his death in a plane crash while trying to negotiate peace in present-day Zambia. His journal, published as Markings, revealed the depth of his Christian faith.
